What are Cookies, Types, and Why are they Important?

What is a Cookie?

A cookie is a small data file that is stored on a user’s device when they visit a website. This file contains information about the person, such as their preferences or browsing behaviours. It is used to improve the user experience on the page.

What are Cookies for?

Cookies contain information about the user, so one of their primary functions is to identify and remember their accesses and credentials so that they do not have to enter them every time they enter the website. They also serve to remember preferences and behaviours within the page, so if you have an online store, you can be shown and reminded of the existence of those items in which you have already shown interest. They even allow us to learn browsing habits, which is very useful for showing the user advertising or content related to their interests.

All this information can also be beneficial in analyzing how the website is being used, determining if there are aspects that can be improved, and knowing its performance.

Types of cookies

In addition to knowing the importance of cookies, it is necessary to know that there are different types:

  • Session cookies: These are those that keep the user’s session active during browsing.
  • Persistent cookies: They store information about the user so that it can be used on future visits. They usually remain on the device for a particular time or until the user expressly deletes them.

Session and persistent cookies can be of different types depending on their functionality or objective:

  • First-party cookies: These are those created by the website.
  • Third-party cookies: Unlike first-party cookies, these have been created by someone external to the website, usually by advertisers.
  • Security cookies: They serve to identify and prevent any errors in the security of the website.
  • Performance cookies: They collect information about the user in order to improve the browsing experience and performance on future visits.
  • Functionality cookies: They serve to remember browsing actions and habits, making it easier to personalize future visits.
  • Social network cookies: Allow sharing content from social networks and serve to track user activity on different platforms.
  • Advertising and targeting cookies: They are used to offer the user advertisements that are relevant to them based on their interests and browsing habits. Usually, these types of cookies are persistent.

There are no cookies that are more effective than others since it depends on the objective you pursue as a company. Furthermore, all of them are compatible with each other.

How to adapt your website to the current cookie policy

Since the entry into force of the RGPD (General Data Protection Regulation) and the LOPD (Organic Law on Data Protection), the user must accept cookies from the website in order to store them on their device.

In order to comply with the current cookie policy, it is necessary to know and understand the type of cookies that are being used on the website and what their purpose is. It will also be required to inform the user, in a completely transparent manner, of this and give them the option to accept or reject these cookies. Another critical point is to give users the option to modify their preferences at any time.

You must always comply with current laws, so in the event of any change, the cookie policy must be updated along with its management to adapt to the new law, always guaranteeing the security and privacy of user data.

What is the difference between accepting or rejecting cookies?

There is some difference between accepting cookies and rejecting cookies. When a user decides to accept them, their navigation is usually more personalized, which improves their experience within the website. On the other hand, when you reject them, some functionalities are limited, and some content cannot be personalized, but in return, your privacy improves.
